We have all heard the term SEO ... It has been drilled into our minds with every ad we see, every lecture we hear, and every tip on website development we receive. Search Engine Optimization. Sounds easy! ... But is it? Of course it is!
Let me show you just how easy it is!
In this article I will cover the basics of this phenomenon. I will deal with the subject in layman terms and will not attempt to wow you with any claims that I have conquered all in this arena, nor will I say that one easy step will skyrocket you to the top of every search engine. I am not even trying to sell you anything!
I will mention a few tools that you may find very useful. Not tools I have created, but ones I believe to offer you help in reaching the pinnacle of marketing success, and save you valuable time. Look them over and decide which ones you find most beneficial. Use your own judgment in deciding what you really need and when. The tools will be highlighted in yellow, like the following one. These will be live links you may click on for more information about what they offer.
1) Find your keywords. By carefully analyzing what your site offers,
you will be able to come up with 3-4 key words that best wrap up what you
offer, and the target audience you wish to reach. For example, at
Family Review Center, we focus on Family Product Reviews. So, our keywords
are "family, review, reviews, product". If you cannot decide on 3-4 words,
or want to ensure the ones you have chosen will produce results in the search engines,
I suggest using Overture's Selection Tool to enter your chosen words. This tool is free to use and will show you how many times the word(s) you enter were searched for last month. It will also show the results for closely related words, so you can make a wise choice. The higher the number Overture gives you, the better.
2) Check the competition for those keywords.
To do this, I suggest using Google and the ALLINANCHOR tool they offer.
Go to google.com or use your handy dandy all in one
. I find the toolbar makes life so much simpler and my tasks so much faster, but you can accomplish your current goal by merely visiting the Google website. In the Google Search box, type in allinanchor: and then
one of your chosen words or phrases. Example, I could type in
allinanchor: review, or allinanchor: family review. If I
type in family review, then I see two things - I see family review has 244,000 other sites using these words as key words. I also see Family Review Center
shows up first in the results! - BINGO! This shows out of the 244,000 competitors for
the words family review, Family Review Center is on top at Google.
Having never paid a cent for the top coverage of two of our main keywords, we have passed all of the competition. When using the allinanchor: tool, the lower the number presented to you, the better. This means it will be easier to get your site toward the top, faster.
Please do not think your words have to come out in the #1 position for you to be successful. I always try to get as high up there as possible, but if you show on the
first page of Google results, you have been successful.
3) Now we want to focus on your webpage itself. (A) Title!
You want ALL of your keywords to show in your page title. This is vitally important.
(B) meta tags - keywords - Not as important as the title, but make sure your keywords
area is not flooded with words unrelated to what is seen on the page. They should
match closely to what viewers will see on the page, or they may be seen as
red flags to search engine robots. (C) Use the h1 tags on your page.
By placing your key words in H1 tags, the search engines will pay close attention.
(D) make sure your title or keywords appear somewhere at the top of the page
and again somewhere at the bottom of the page. Search engines look for this
and it should be there for them to find. (E) Use your keywords and related words
throughout the body text on your page. By keeping a close match to the text and keywords, your page will show more weight in these key areas. (F) Emphasize your
keywords once or twice on the page. By adding BOLD or italicized
print when typing your keywords a few times on the page throughout the text, the search engines will pick up on this as showing importance of those words to your
page content.
4) Now we want to focus on links. You do not want to just have a bunch of
links on the page. What you do want to have is meaningful links on the page.
Links to pages that have something in common with your keywords.
Going back to the Google search you did prior for your keywords,
you can look for other sites to link with. Asking them to exchange links
with you, will help your site and theirs. Search engines look for sites
that link back to your site, that have a common theme. This shows them
the importance of the page. The more "targeted" links you have back and
forth, the better. Take your time and scout out the best ones and then
approach them with your offer. If one says no, find another. There are
multiple to choose from. [NOTE:] Prior to asking a webmaster to exchange links with you, make sure the page you have set up on your site for adding links
is directly linked to your main site page, or those you ask will most likely turn you down.
By following these simple steps you will be well on your way to moving up in the search engine world. While there are other measures (shared on many of the yellow highlighted tools I share on this page) you can take to further help your site, these
basic and simple steps will give you more ranking leverage than you thought possible, and usually quite quickly.
